Colon – Location & Overview
The colon (also known as bowel or large intestine) is the end portion of the human digestive tract. It is a continuous food carrying passageway extending from the mouth to the anus. Your colon is approximately 5 feet long and 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Its major functions are the absorption of water and minerals and the formation and elimination of waste (faeces).
What is Colonic Hydrotherapy?
During colon hydrotherapy treatment pure filtered water is introduced into the colon via the anus by a qualified therapist. The purpose of the treatment is to achieve optimal bowel function through the removal of excess wastes, toxins, bacterium and gas. Colon therapy also exercises the colon which results in improved absorption, assimilation and elimination which is instrumental in maintaining the health and wellbeing of the body and mind.
A brief introduction to history of Colonic Hydrotherapy
Colonic hydrotherapy is not a new therapy. Washing the colon with water dates back to Egyptian times. In fact colon cleansing was first recorded in an Egyptian medical papyrus dated as early as 1500 B.C. The Egyptians used colon washes to treat a diverse range of diseases.
The Hippocrates, founders of Western medicine, used and still use enemas for colon cleansing.
From the 1920s to the 1960s, the regular use of enemas in most hospitals was standard practice amongst most medical practitioners in both Europe and America.
How often should we move our bowel?
Most experts agree that if you are not having at least 2 or 3 bowel movements every day, then by definition, you should consider yourself constipated. Sadly today it is considered ‘normal’ to only have a bowel movement every 2-3 days. Constipation is a state of the bowel in which evacuations are infrequent and difficult, or where the colon becomes lined with impacted, hardened faeces.
Many people are constipated without even recognising the condition, they have experienced poor, narrow stools for so long, they think it is ‘normal.’ When the colon is packed with a layer of old, toxic waste, it is not possible for the lining of the colon to function normally, and the glands in this lining cannot produce the necessary intestinal flora or lubrication. The lack of lubrication in the colon makes the constipation worse and this leads to more colon toxicity and possible disease.
The Inner Health Colonic Treatment
At Inner Health you will experience colonic hydrotherapy as it should be, specific, gentle, discreet, relaxing and extremely effective. I work with your body’s natural rhythm ensuring your nervous system remains calm therefore enabling you to have a relaxing as well as a cleansing experience.
I use short & long fills as well as temperature adjustment all the while ensuring the nervous system and colon remain calm throughout. This results in the treatment being much more effective allowing the colon to expel gas, toxins and waste in a calm manner.
I use the state of the art, Aqua-Clinic™ device which is based on the traditional closed system, but with a built-in double filtration system. It has adjustable temperature and flow controls which hold temperature and flow extremely well. It has a very quiet and gentle operation which is suitable for fragile clients. No electricity is used in the operation, making the equipment suitable for EMF-sensitive clients; and unlike in most other pressure devices, waste DOES NOT go through the machine thus ensuring hygiene and safety 100%. The system can be used both in free flow mode and in gradual or full water restriction mode, enabling a personalised treatment programme which depends entirely on the clients needs, but best of all the deep hydration effect enables effective results from the very first treatment.
The treatment I provide will ensure your comfort and safety above all else. I only use disposable equipment so you are assured of a safe, sterile and hygienic treatment.
A typical treatment
During your first colon hydrotherapy appointment I will guide you through a consultation, during which the procedure will be explained and we will talk through your completed colon hydrotherapy intake questionnaire.
After we have spoken, I’ll ask you to undress from the waist down, you will be given a towel to cover yourself. I’ll relax you and help your body and mind to prepare for the treatment. Once laid down on the treatment couch, I will ask you to turn onto your left hand side and bend your knees towards your chest. I will then gentle insert a lubricated speculum and connect the speculum to the pipes.
The treatment will start with warm purified water running gently into the colon. I will massage your abdominal area during the treatment; massage has a calming effect on the colon which will increase the effectiveness of the treatment. When slight pressure builds up in the colon, the water is gently released along with waste matter from the colon. Just one colon hydrotherapy session may be equivalent to having 20 or 30 regular bowel movements. Eliminations during subsequent therapy sessions can be even more substantial as older, hardened, impacted faeces is cleansed from the colon walls.
The treatment will last between 35 and 45 minutes, but you should allow one hour oe one hour fifteen if it is your first treatment, as you will need time to change before and after the treatment.
After the treatment you may want to sit on the toilet to release the rest of the water and wastes. Then you will change into your clothes and we’ll talk about your results, run through your aftercare and discuss how many treatments you might need.
Most people report a marked improvement in symptoms straight after treatment, however it should be noted that not everyone feels fantastic after having a colonic. How you feel is directly related to how robust your liver detoxification system is. If the liver is congested it may struggle with the additional toxins it has to process after the treatment. This can result in some temporary tiredness and possible headaches, in some cases however this may progress beyond 24hrs, in which case further colonic hydrotherapy treatment should be sought in order to take the load off the liver.
Benefits of Colonic Hydrotherapy
Toxic material is broken down so it can no longer harm your body or inhibit assimilation of foods and elimination of waste. Faecal debris built up over a long period is gently removed over a series of colon hydrotherapy treatments. Once this impacted material is removed, your colon can again resume its normal absorption and elimination function. A colon hydrotherapy session may be considered a rejuvenation treatment for your body.
2. Strengthens the colon muscles
The build up of toxic debris weakens the colon and impairs its functions. Gentle filling and emptying of the colon can improve peristalsis (natural muscular contraction) that aids efficient removal of waste material.
3. Reshapes the colon
Over time, the natural shape of a problematic colon will become distorted causing even more problems. The gentle water action and massage techniques of the therapist will help eliminate protruding pockets of waste and narrow, spastic constrictions. After a series of colon hydrotherapy sessions, the colon gradually begins to resume its natural shape.
4. Stimulation of reflex points
Every system and organ of the body is connected to the colon by reflex points. A colon hydrotherapy session stimulates these reflex points, thereby affecting the corresponding body parts in a beneficial way, similar to reflexology.
5. Related benefits from colon hydrotherapy

Stages of colon cancer
A normal healthy transit time of food is less than 24 hours; on average in the UK it is now 60 hours for men and 70 hours for women. In fact the UK is the most constipated nation in the world. Sadly the UK has the highest incidence of bowel cancer in the world, with 20,000 new cases each year.
One in three people consulting GP have a bowel problem such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Colitis, Crohn’s Disease, Diverticulitis and Candida. When waste matter sits inside the colon dehydration and stagnation occurs, therefore toxins build up and this creates erratic conditions in the body we call disease.
Common diseases in the colon
Toxins from the colon are absorbed throughout the body and can manifest themselves in a wide range of health problems and general malaise affecting so many in the UK. Proper bowel management and health will never be achieved through the use of drugs and/or surgery. The answer lies in a time-proven and natural approach – colon hydrotherapy.
In the last 10 years there has been a resurgence of interest in alternative medicine and personal health care. Once again people are discovering the many health benefits of maintaining a strong and clean colon. This return to using colon hydrotherapy has been helped by the development of sophisticated colon hydrotherapy machines, which make the treatment both safe and comfortable.
Our lifestyle causes colon toxicity
Today we are exposed to more stress, lack of sleep and exercise, chemicals, drugs, and food additives in the processed foods that we eat than ever before in our history. The removal of these toxins is essential to healthy body function. Healthy body function means a strong immune system able to fight and eliminate disease. Your colon may be burdened with putrefying food, bacteria, viruses, indigestible chemicals, and encrusted pockets of fermented waste (faeces).
The evacuation of a stool only once a day can result in the re-absorption of 85% of bowel toxins! If this happens, the colon may become saturated with harmful toxins, this leads to a process called ‘autointoxication’. This means that toxic substances can be transported into the bloodstream where the lymphatic, circulatory systems, lungs and kidneys, can over time become overburdened and when these systems are unable to cope with the toxic overload your body is exposed to serious health risks.
Typical symptoms of colon toxicity;
aching muscles or joints
attention deficit disorder
brittle nails or hair
cold hands and feet
expressive gas or bloating
irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
inability to lose weight
lower back pain
These are common conditions which may respond well to colon hydrotherapy.
The typical first world diet of refined, processed foods, high in saturated fats, sugar, flour, preservatives and low in fibre will cause problems for the colon as we were not designed to process these substances in large quantities. This results in an unclean, weak and poorly functioning colon that is a breeding ground for disease, sickness, possibly death. People are again beginning to understand that a clean, strong and well functioning colon is essential to maintaining optimal health.
DID YOU KNOW?
- 20% of the UK population suffers from IBS symptoms at some
time during their lives, and 5% are chronic sufferers. It is more prevalent in females.
- Laxative sales in the UK are multi million £’s per annum.
The ideal bowel transit time is less than 24 hours.
In adulthood, all our vitamin K needs are provided by our own
- There are more bacteria present in the colon than there are cells
that make up our own body.
- The repercussions of poor bowel function may be seen throughout the body in a wide range of health problems.
Preperation and Aftercare
The most important thing to do before a colonic is to HYDRATE your bowel. One of the main actions of colonic hydrotherapy is in re-hydrating old dried up faecal matter which through lack of drinking water, excess dehydrating beverages and foods, and excessive transit time have become impacted.
To hydrate your bowel if possible for SEVEN days prior to you treatment
- Drink at least 1.5 litres of pure filtered or spring water every day
- Avoid drinking coffee, alcohol and fizzy sugary drinks
- Only drink pure fruit juices without added sugar (it must say ‘pure’ on the pack)
- Avoid salt as much as possible by reducing process foods and crisps
After your colonic take it easy
The effects of your colonic will go on for a number of days (2-4) after your treatment. They will be varied from a boost in energy level or occasionally a headache or feeling a little tired. Bowel movements may take a few days to return to normal. This is a time to give your digestion and yourself a break by eating foods which are easy to break down and by taking time to pamper yourself. You may also feel a little cold afterwards; make sure to keep warm, drink warm herbal tea or soup and bring an extra layer with you just in case.
You should feel fine after a colonic hydrotherapy treatment, and not experience any unwanted side-effects; here are a few simple measures to follow:
- Follow any specific advice on diet, supplements, exercise, etc.
- Don’t overeat. Eat simply cooked or raw food, and chew well.
- A diet rich in fruit and vegetables (especially leafy) will add to the cleansing effect and help to regulate bowels.
- Don’t eat red meat (beef, lamb, pork and game) every day; white meat, fish and vegetarian meals are much easier to digest.
- Eat only whole grains, e.g. brown rice, wholemeal flour, NOT refined e.g. white flour products, pasta.
- Avoid lots of mucus-forming foods like refined grains, dairy products and eggs.
- A small amount of water is absorbed during the colonic treatment, and you may notice an increased need to urinate. This is normal, and will subside quickly.
- Drink plenty of fluids. If your digestion is weak, don’t drink with meals or for 30 minutes before or 1 hour after meals.
- Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours.
You may experience some flatulence and bowel sounds – this is due to the bowel bacteria multiplying back up to strength for up to 48 hours after treatment. Probiotic supplements/foods may be useful, and the fruit and vegetables will help.
If griping occurs, drink hot Peppermint, Fennel or Chamomile infusions, and avoid cold drinks, carbonated drinks and gassy foods.
Don’t expect a bowel movement the next day: depending upon your condition, it may take several days before normal bowel movements resume.
Avoid rigorous exercise and weight lifting for 24 hours after treatment.
Probiotics in the form of capsules, sauerkraut or kefir will help to re-colonise your gut with friendly bacteria.
Vegetables in all forms, especially lightly steamed or in soups.
Brown rice, porridge, quinoa and millet are rich in beneficial fibre and will help the friendly bacteria in your gut as well as improve your transit time.
COLON HYDROTHERAPY FAQ
Why do people have colonics?
Colon hydrotherapy treatment is used to achieve optimal bowel function through the removal of excess wastes, toxins, bacterium and gas which otherwise build up causing widespread harm throughout the body, as all body systems are closely correlated with each other. Colon therapy also exercises the colon which results in improved absorption, assimilation and elimination which is instrumental in maintaining health and wellbeing of the body and mind.
We always encourage a healthy balanced diet along with rest and exercise as the basis towards good health. It is a fact however, that many people suffer with bowel problems and there are many drugs that are regularly used to treat symptoms of bowel problems. Colonic hydrotherapy is an effective way of removing waste matter by using the gentle introduction of water into the bowel which stimulates the muscle to contract thus emptying itself.
How can Colon Hydrotherapy help?
Colonic hydrotherapy is a gentle internal bath using warm, purified water that can help to eliminate stored faecal matter, gas, mucus and toxic substances from the colon. A practice dating from around 1500 B.C., colonics can also help tone and reshape the colon.
However, colonics have a much broader effect than simply cleansing the colon.
Additional benefits can often be observed throughout the body in the form of clearer skin, more energy and mental clarity, fewer headaches, improvement in circulatory, immune and weight problems and many other positive side effects. Many people are referred to colonic practitioners by other alternative medicine therapists including homeopaths, acupuncturists, herbalists, etc., since these therapies tend to be more effective once the system is detoxified. More and more often mainstream physicians are recommending colon hydrotherapy treatments to their patients.
Are they dangerous in any way?
Being an essentially natural process, there is virtually no danger with a colonic. The water is introduced at a low gentle pressure in order to gently stimulate the bowel muscle. All equipment used is disposable and will never be used on anyone else. Unlike the use of laxatives, colon hydrotherapy is not habit forming and will help improve the tone of the colon.
Will the colonic fix my bowel and my digestion?
Colonic hydrotherapy is a powerful tool that gives you a head start in improving your diet, lifestyle and exercise regime. However, a tool is only as good as the person using it. If you use colonics to help your body improve, feel younger and work more effectively, then this is what you will achieve. However, if you use colonic as roadside assistance only, then you will achieve a short-term rather than a long-term improvement.
Will Colonic Hydrotherapy help if I’ve had constipation for a long time?
Colonics alongside a healthy diet, lifestyle and exercise regime can be extremely effective at correcting bowel function and therefore alleviating constipation. It is important to address all these areas, as well as any underlying stress in order to achieve optimal bowel function.
Colonics help to strengthen the intestinal smooth muscle, improve peristalsis, which is the muscle contraction required to move feces through the colon and remove compacted waste.
A series of treatments undertaken one to two weeks apart has been shown to have the most success at helping to alleviate longstanding symptoms of constipation. The use of probiotics alongside the treatment are required to ensure any imbalances in the bowel flora are addressed.
Will it improve my skin?
During a colonic treatment, the removal of toxins from the bowel as well as flushing through the liver and the kidneys will help bring about improvements to any skin condition.
Some People say that colonics clear out all gut bacteria, including the good stuff, is this true?
Good bacteria can only breed in a balanced environment. It also stands to reason that valuable nutrients can better be absorbed in a clean environment than in a putrefied one. Some good as well as bad bacteria are removed during a colonic. Due to our western diets, medications, lifestyle and stress many people have gut flora that is out of balance. Taking a high strength probiotic for two months after treatment will help shift this balance to bring about many health improvements. Bowel bacteria is essential to health, it is our first line of defense so it’s essential to keep it in tip top condition.
Can our immune system benefit from Colonic Hydrotherapy?
As we house the majority of our immune system within our colon, it is important to keep the colon clean so that we have a perfect breeding ground for healthy gut flora to proliferate.
Does it hurt?
Colon hydrotherapy does not cause pain. At the start of the procedure, you may experience a “strange” sensation of wanting to go to the toilet, but most people get used to this feeling in the first few minutes, and even find the colonic treatment “unexpectedly relaxing”.
Is it embarrassing?
It doesn’t need to be, remember that your therapist performs the treatment every day and does this in order to help people with whatever condition they present with. The treatment is very discreet, you are encouraged to relax, and will be made to feel at ease. You will only be uncovered for a brief period whilst the speculum is gently inserted, the rest of the time you are completely covered up. The waste removal is linked up with the toilet, so there is no mess or odour to be concerned about. After the treatment you will be left in private to sit on the toilet to ensure any remaining water and or waste is removed before you leave.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments needed varies from client to client and depends on the condition of your colon, the results of your first colonic, as well as your personal goals and indeed the reasons for having colon hydrotherapy. If a condition has been building up for years, it is unlikely that it will disappear completely after 35-45 minutes of cleansing, but most people feel improvements after the very first session. Typically though, a larger number of clients new to Colon Hydrotherapy will embark on a course of several sessions to see a considerable improvement in the health of their colon. This is because the colon is often full of gas and stubborn faecal matter that may be resistant to dislodging in the first session.
If you’re looking to kick start a healthier lifestyle and see vast improvements in problems such as constipation it is recommended that a course of 6 to 8 treatments within a short period of time (1 or 2 treatments a week) will provide great benefits and relief from problematic symptoms. We will discuss your requirements and outcomes during your initial consultation.
If you go on a maintenance programme and between treatments adopt dietary and lifestyle changes, if required, then the number of colonics will be reduced, and the periods between colonics will be longer.
However if you find it easier to come to Inner Health, get on with the treatment, and forget all about it till next time, I would recommend more frequent treatments, to maintain a higher level of health.
Will I lose weight?
You will lose pounds in weight, but this is faecal waste only, not fat or cellulite. Regular treatments will increase your metabolism, so if you start eating less, increase your fibre intake, exercise regularly, chew better and drink more water, then you will achieve a healthy permanent weight loss.
What will I feel like after the treatment?
Generally, you will be able to continue with your daily plans, drive, go back to work etc.
Some people feel energised straight away, some feel tired “in a nice way” – in the same way as one feels tired after a good workout, some feel lighter, some feel very hungry, some don’t feel like eating for hours afterwards….
In some instances people may feel quite tired as the detoxification process kicks in deeper, and in these instances we recommend coming for a repeat colonic without delay.
We don’t recommend eating heavy food and drinking alcohol, coffee or tea for 48 to 72 hours after the treatment, to get the full benefit of the detoxification process.
What can I expect after the treatment?
Generally speaking as soon as your treatment is completed you can carry on with your normal routine. Occasionally some people may have more bowel movements over the next few hours, but there shouldn’t be any uncontrollable urgency or discomfort.
Why do you recommend supplements after a colonic treatment?
In the ideal world, if you lived on naturally fertile farmland and ate organic home-grown freshly cut vegetables, berries and fruit, fish from the river, natural live yoghurt etc you would not need any supplements (and, as a matter of fact, you would not need a detox programme either!)
However, in the real world we need to assist our bodies to self-cleanse, hence the need for supplementation.
What supplements would you recommend for maintenance between colonic treatments?
Probiotic supplements are recommended to give a head start to the good bacteria that populate our bowel and that ensure absorption by the body of nutrients and vitamins from our food.
Patrick Holford, Britain’s leading nutrition expert (author of the best-selling “Optimum Nutrition Bible”) says:
“ Supplements are needed to carry beneficial bacteria into the intestine to re-establish a healthy colony. The role of these Bifidobacteria is to increase acidity by producing lactic acid and acetic acid, and to inhibit undesirable micro-organisms that would compete against them… Tissues densely covered with beneficial organisms provide an effective blocking mechanism, deterring invading pathogens”.
Digestizyme and Soya Lecithin promote healthy digestion. Other supplements improve bowel tone, cleanse bowel walls, bulk up the stool, remove gases and provide quality and regularity of elimination.
We normally recommend only one or at most two supplements at a time, for relatively short periods of time, to help your body start working more efficiently. I get my supplements from reputable British and US suppliers, however most of them are still very inexpensive and present great value for money.
But even a full-blown supplementation programme will cost you per day less than a cup of cappuccino, a pint of lager or a glass of wine. Once you have invested a considerable sum of money into having a colonic, then low-cost maintenance definitely makes sense.
Can I have a colonic if I am having a period?
Yes you can. Please make sure you have a spare tampon or towel that you can use immediately after the treatment.
Can I have a colonic if I am pregnant?
I would not recommend colonics during pregnancy unless it is recommended and performed by a qualified medical practitioner specialising in pregnancy.
Please note, if you decide you would like a colonic whilst pregnant treatments can not be performed during the first 20 weeks.
How soon after the childbirth can I have a colonic? Can I have it while I am nursing?
You can have a colonic 10-12 weeks after a regular childbirth, unless you had complications or a caesarean. You need to decide for yourself whether your body has recovered enough from the shock of the childbirth. Make sure your stitches have healed fully, talk to your doctor or nurse if in doubt.
Will I be able to drive home after the colonic?
Yes there shouldn’t be any difficulty driving after a colonic treatment.
Will I be able to eat straight after the treatment?
Yes, we recommend eating lightly for the next 24hrs. No rich or spicy foods should be consumed. Light salads, fresh juices soups or stews are encouraged.
What equipment do you use?
I use the latest model of CE-approved Aqua-Clinic Class 1 Medical Device, probably the gentlest colon hydrotherapy device on the market with a great hydrating ability, designed and manufactured in the UK to comply fully with UK water board and health and safety requirements. It uses a double filtration system for incoming water: carbon and particle filter making sure the water is as fresh and clean as possible. The equipment does not require electric current for its use; which makes it suitable for EMF-sensitive clients.
I also use a infrared massager to make sure your treatment is pleasant and comfortable.
Do I have to leave my modesty at the door?
You certainly don’t need to. I use fully disposable kits: water line, waste line, speculum and towels. You will be covered all the time. Your privacy and discretion are of my utmost concern.
